Wear-resistant fillers for coating production

Wear-resistant fillers for coating production

According to their application scenarios, wear-resistant fillers are categorized into general-purpose wear-resistant fillers, hard high-wear-resistant fillers and functional wear-resistant fillers (combining wear resistance with acid and alkali resistance, thermal conductivity and antistatic properties).  They are suitable for water-based coatings, polyurethane, epoxy, industrial anti-corrosion coatings, flooring, and plastic topcoats, etc. This section mainly explains hard high-wear-resistant fillers and functional wear-resistant fillers.

1. White Fused Alumina / Brown Fused Alumina Wear-Resistant Filler
Mohs hardness 9.0, extremely high hardness, top-tier wear resistance.

White Fused Alumina: High whiteness, suitable for light-colored and white wear-resistant topcoats; slightly harder than brown fused alumina, with fewer impurities.

Brown Fused Alumina: High cost-performance ratio, wear-resistant and high-temperature resistant; used in epoxy wear-resistant flooring, engineering machinery topcoats, heavy-duty anti-corrosion steel structures and wear-resistant coating for pipe interiors. Not suitable for light-colored coating(yellowing).

Disadvantages: Sharp powder edges, causing long-term wear on mixing equipment; conductive, unsuitable for insulating topcoats.

2. Platelet aluminum oxide wear-Resistant Filler: A high-frequency wear-resistant filler in the industry, in flat form.

Platelet aluminum oxide: Layered stacking creates a dense film, providing wear and scratch resistance while also resisting UV rays and water vapor penetration. Suitable for automotive paints, metallic paints, water-based polyurethane topcoats, and high-end floor coatings.

3. Black Silicon Carbide Wear-Resistant Filler, Green Silicon Carbide Wear-Resistant Filler

1. Black Silicon Carbide: High wear resistance, good thermal conductivity, and semiconductor conductivity; suitable for antistatic wear-resistant flooring, electromagnetic shielding wear-resistant coatings, high-temperature anti-corrosion paints, and rubber anti-corrosion coatings. High-voltage insulating paint is strictly prohibited.

2. Green Silicon Carbide: High purity, insulating, wear-resistant, and acid and alkali resistant; suitable for high-end insulating wear-resistant paints, photovoltaic anti-corrosion coatings, and topcoats for insulating equipment.

4. Garnet Wear-Resistant Filler
Garnet has a Mohs scale of 7.5~8, rounded edges, is wear-resistant without damaging mixing equipment, and requires minimal sandpaper for sanding. Suitable for: marine anti-corrosion paints, container coatings, floor paints, and hardware anti-corrosion paints. Low dust, produces a fine paint film; acid and alkali resistant, free of free iron, and will not rust when used with stainless steel coatings.
