The application of white fused alumina powder in the production of optical fiber products is mainly concentrated in the precision grinding and polishing of ceramic ferrules for optical fiber connectors. It is a key consumable material to ensure low-loss transmission of optical signals.

The zirconia or alumina ceramic ferrules inside fiber optic connectors (such as FC/SC/LC/MPO) need to achieve nanoscale surface finish, and white fused alumina micropowder plays a key role in this process:

Rough grinding and semi-fine grinding: Use coarser-grained (such as #1200-#3000mesh) white fused alumina micropowder to remove the machining allowance of the inner hole and end face of the core, and use its high cutting force to quickly form the core.

As grinding media:White fused alumina is used as the main component to make ‌abrasive paper, abrasive discs, abrasive belts, polishing belts, polishing cloths, abrasive cloths, abrasive films, polishing fluids or bonded abrasives‌, and is used with fiber optic grinders for multi-process processing.

High purity and low impurities:The Al₂O₃ content of white fused alumina powder is usually ≥99%. The iron (Fe₂O₃≤0.1%) and sodium (Na₂O₃≤0.4%) contents are strictly controlled to avoid metal ions contaminating the ceramic surface and affecting the optical performance, and there is no risk of iron residue.

Moderate hardness and good self-sharpening properties:White fused alumina has a Mohs hardness of 9.0, has high cutting efficiency and low heat generation, preventing the ceramic ferrule from micro chipping or thermal stress cracks due to overheating.

Concentrated PSD:White fused alumina micro powder is processed using techniques such as hydraulic overflow grading to ensure uniform particle size and avoid defects such as “black rings” caused by large particles scratching the end face.
